life|line «LYF LYN», noun, or life line,
1. a rope for saving life, such as one thrown to a person in the water or a line fired across a ship to haul aboard a breeches buoy.
2. a line across a deck or passageway of a ship to grab to prevent falling or being washed overboard.
3. a diver's signaling line.
4. Figurative. anything that maintains something, such as a remote military position, that cannot exist by itself.
